My next installment is the lovely Suzanne Rae. Graduate of the Parsons The New School for Design, Suzanne Rae Pelaez lives and designs out of Brooklyn. After a professional career that began in the art gallery scene in New York and eventually led to the design ateliers of Costume National in Milan and Morgane Le Fay in New York, Suzanne was ultimately determined to bring her dream of a namesake fashion line to fruition.*
Suzanne designs for the Gentlewoman. She is inspired by the progressive, empowered and modern woman.* I had the chance to speak with Suzanne as she was prepping her lookbook for the next Suzanne Rae collection F/W 2014.
Tell us about your inspiration behind your latest collection, Spring 2014. How is it different from your past inspirations? Who or what inspire you?
The S14 collection, inspired by the book 2150 AD by Thea Alexander, is about a humanitarian utopia, about clothing that inspires us to be open-minded, accepting, knowledgeable, responsible, and loving.
The Collection has a futuristic feel as well as this down to earth vibe. As such, it embodies a relevant minimalism, a trend that I believe has come back around because of increased consciousness of sustainability.
Different things inspire me, but I do look for something relevant, so that what inspires me can also inspire those I create for.
Your favorite looks from the Fall and Spring 2014 collections and why.
Above is my favorite look from spring 2014. I love the silhouette, I love the fabric, love the versatility in terms of who can where and when can wear. We are doing fall 2014 now… stay tuned!
Who’s your dream clientele?
I think that the woman who appreciates Suzanne Rae, and perhaps particularly the spring 2014 collection, is aware of the future and knows her part in shaping it. She knows the importance of sustainability, of redefining gender roles, of open-mindedness and acceptance. And at the same time she knows that the man who knows something knows that he knows nothing at all. That’s an Erykah Badu quote, by the way.
What advice would you give to newcomer designers?
Stay trill.
Describe your design aesthetic in three words.
Minimalist, sophisticated, progressive
If you could time travel to any era, which would you pick and why?
I think the 1920s. I love the clothes as well as the also the excitement of the progressivism for which the clothes express.
What do you love most about Brooklyn?
The encouragement of individuality.
What was your favorite moment from creating the Spring 2014 collection?
Reading 2150 AD and deciding/visualizing to create a collection from the book.
